Our Family Heritage
Stanislaw Historical Materials

Stanislaw is the homeland of the Banner ancestors.  When the family lived there, it was part of Austria.  It has been under Russian, German, and Polish rule.  Today the city is called Ivano Frankivsk and it is in the country of Ukraine.  Before the Holocaust, Stanislaw was part of Poland and was referred to as Stanislawow.

Sophie Banner visited Stanislaw in 1936 to meet her relatives.  She was on a return trip from Palastine (now Israel), where she had lived for 18 months.  While in Stanislaw, Sophie wrote letters home, describing her family and current events.  She brought back a set of postcards showing Stanislaw in 1936 and a book, The Great Synagogue of Stanislaw, dated 1936.  The cover of the book is inscirbed M. Banner.  This probably was Monyeh Banner, her uncle.  The entire Banner family in Stanislaw was murdered by Hitler in 1942.

There are links here to the letters, postcards, and the book.
